The DEF continues to track the updates to telehealth billing and we wanted to share them with you.

According to a new release from CMS, we are now able to bill telephone calls as E/Ms in cases where the patient either does not have the capability or access to teleconferencing software (FaceTime, Duo, Sykpe, etc.). See more at this link: https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/fact-sheets/additional-backgroundsweeping-regulatory-changes-help-us-healthcare-system-address-covid-19-patient

Additionally, according to the AAD, Medicare will begin paying for the 00441-99443 (telephone visit) codes moving forward. Where possible, it would still be best to use FaceTime/Duo/Skype, but as we encounter these cases where audio is the only method available, there are a few things to take into consideration when determining which code to use. See attached for guidance on when to bill an E/M versus a phone call.

We will continue to report updates as we receive them. Be safe and healthy!
